Word & Character Counter
Check the length of a draft before publishing. Paste plain text to count words, visible characters, whitespace-free characters, lines, paragraphs and UTF-8 bytes.
Your selected images and pasted text stay in this browser tab. No upload, account or paid AI call.

Know what each number means
Words use the browser’s Unicode word segmentation with an explicit English locale; word-like numbers count, while punctuation and emoji do not. Complete keycap emoji are treated as separators before word segmentation. Visible characters use grapheme clusters, so a combining accent or joined family emoji can be one character. The whitespace-free count excludes clusters made entirely of whitespace.
Lines include trailing empty lines, with CRLF treated as one line break. Unicode NEXT LINE and line/paragraph separators are also recognized. Blank lines and Unicode paragraph separators divide paragraphs; whitespace-only paragraphs do not count. UTF-8 bytes describe the current text field, not a source document or downloaded file. Browsers may normalize pasted line endings.
A local drafting aid, with practical limits
Counts update after a brief pause in typing. Your text stays in this tab and is not uploaded, sent to AI or saved in local storage. HTML and code remain literal plain text. Clear removes the current input and numbers from the interface; it cannot remove a previous clipboard copy.
The limit is 100,000 UTF-16 text units; some emoji use several units. Oversized input is not silently truncated: reduce it before counting. A browser with Intl.Segmenter is required. Publishers and other languages may use different word or character rules; use the destination’s own counter when enforcing its limit. This tool does not assess writing quality or SEO rankings.
How to use it
- Paste plain text — Type or paste the draft, or use the example without providing your own content.
- Read the counts — After a short pause, compare words, characters, lines, paragraphs and UTF-8 bytes.
- Check your destination’s rules — Use the destination’s own limit checker when its counting convention matters. Clear the field when finished.
Frequently asked questions
Why do other counters give different totals?
Counters disagree about contractions, numbers, CJK segmentation, emoji and combining characters. This tool uses the browser’s English-locale Unicode segmentation and explains the remaining rules above.
Are emoji one character?
A complete joined emoji sequence can be one grapheme cluster even though it contains several Unicode code points and UTF-16 units. Emoji are not counted as words here.
Does it count uploaded document bytes?
No. It counts the UTF-8 encoding of the text currently in the field. A document’s markup, formatting and original line endings can make its file size different.
Is the draft sent anywhere?
The counter does not send or store the draft. Text is analysed locally, and no AI service is called. The site still loads ordinary page resources.
